Formed in 1980, The Kokomo Blues Band, based in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, backed the legendary Johnny Shines for eight years before teaming up with Little Whitt and Big Bo to produce"Moody Swamp Blues," called CD OF THE YEAR (1995) by Scott Duncan, editor of England's BLUEPRINT magazine. Over the past 16 years Debbie has performed throughout the deep south with the Kokomo Blues Band and has continually worked to promote Alabama Blues artists like Johnny Shines, Jerry McCain, Little Whitt & Big Bo, Willie King, James Peterson, (and others) by sharing her band with them. Debbie continues to help keep the blues alive by working with children through the "Blues in the School" program when she's not gigging.
In 1995 Debbie toured Europe as an acoustic act warming the crowds up for Little Whitt & Big Bo as they toured Ireland, Scotland, England, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany. She has her own CD and is busy getting the word out while performing with other Alabama blues artists in a series of "Alabama Blues Showcases" which finds her playing with the likes of James Peterson, Big Bo McGee, Willie King, and many other less known blues artists from Alabama.
Some Recent highlights: Performed six "Alabama Blues Showcase" gigs for the Mercedes Benz Corporation when they invited the world press to Alabama to for the unveiling of their new Sports Vehicle which is being produced here in Alabama. They recently performed with James Peterson, Willie King and the kids from the "Blues in the School" program at the Birmingham zoo to help raise money for a petting zoo for the children.
Debbie has been working with Jerry "Boogie" McCain teaching in the Birmingham Blues in the School program along with the Alabama Blues Project. The Kokomo Blues Band provided backing for the children in the final performace at the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame. She also just completed six blues educational projects in every housing project in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
